Siempre he considerado que el mejor terror es aquél de sombras e incertidumbre. Sin duda alguna, la sangre explícita se lleva su crédito por generar cierto grado de angustia y repulsión. Pero, ¿no es lo desconocido lo que al final se convierte en la verdadera raíz de nuestro miedo?
En The Exorcist III, William Peter Blatty invoca la imaginación de la audiencia para generar el miedo en ésta. Con respecto a su particular visión del terror en este film, Blatty comentó lo siguiente:
This is my idea of terror, what really frightens me – creaks and shadows, not turning heads and all the rest – which have their place, but not in this film. I think we’ve all understood that your imagination can do more to terrify you than anything presented to you graphically, and that is particularly true today, when audiences are so numbed by everything they’ve seen that young people are actually laughing at scenes of bloodshed and decapitation. But if you can manipulate their deepest fears through suggestion, it will terrify an audience more than specific gore.
